  • Date: 29th October 2024
  • Participants: 15 volunteers from Grant Thornton and 4 staff members from The We Foundation
  • Collaborative Partners: Grant Thornton, Indian Pollution Association Control, The We Foundation

The Clean-Up Drive Campaign was designed to engage the local community, corporate employees, and environmental advocates in collective action for a cleaner, greener Kolkata. With the combined efforts of passionate volunteers, the campaign successfully tackled the issue of litter and waste accumulation in the Nicco Park area, while also promoting long-term sustainable habits for waste management and environmental protection.

Event Highlights

  1. Camp Setup and Preparation
The event was carefully planned with clear objectives and organized logistics. Banners were placed around the site, designated stations for waste sorting were set up, and essential supplies like gloves, bins, and trash bags were provided to all volunteers. This thoughtful preparation ensured that the clean-up drive could proceed efficiently and effectively.
  2. Warm-Up Session
Before the start of the clean-up activities, volunteers participated in a light warm-up session. This included group exercises to energize and build camaraderie among participants, setting the tone for a fun and productive day of environmental service.
  3. Speech & Awareness Session
A key component of the campaign was the awareness session, where a public address was given to educate volunteers and the local community on the environmental challenges posed by waste mismanagement. Speakers highlighted the importance of waste segregation, recycling, and the long-term benefits of keeping public spaces clean. The session aimed to inspire individuals to take ownership of their role in creating a sustainable, clean environment.
  4. Clean-Up Drive
Volunteers worked diligently to collect and sort waste from a 500-meter stretch of Nicco Park and its parking area. The efforts of the group created a visible transformation in the environment, removing a significant amount of litter and waste, improving both the aesthetics and health of the local area. The drive focused on both waste disposal and recycling—materials were sorted for proper disposal, helping to minimize landfill waste and maximize the potential for reuse and recycling.
  5. Food Packet Distribution
As a gesture of appreciation for their hard work, food packets were distributed to all volunteers. This simple act of gratitude helped reinforce the sense of community and camaraderie that was built throughout the day.

Key Outcomes & Impact

  • 80 kg of Waste Collected
The collective efforts of the volunteers led to the successful collection of 80 kg of waste from the Nicco Park area. This amount of waste was sorted, disposed of safely, and helped improve the cleanliness and safety of the locality.
  • Increased Environmental Awareness
One of the major objectives of the campaign was to raise awareness about the environmental impact of waste and promote better waste management practices. The awareness session provided valuable insights on waste segregation, recycling, and sustainable waste disposal practices, which volunteers and the community were encouraged to adopt in their daily lives.
  • Community Engagement and Empowerment
The campaign provided an opportunity for community engagement by bringing together individuals from different walks of life. It empowered volunteers to take ownership of their local environment and fostered a strong sense of responsibility toward keeping their neighborhoods clean. It also built a sense of unity and teamwork among volunteers, reinforcing the idea that collective action can bring about significant change.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Through its active participation in this initiative, Grant Thornton demonstrated its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). By supporting environmental and community-driven projects like this, Grant Thornton is contributing to the betterment of society and promoting sustainable development practices among its employees and the community.
  • Health & Safety Benefits
The clean-up efforts directly improved the health and safety of the local environment by reducing the risks associated with waste accumulation, such as pest infestations and disease transmission. Additionally, by promoting safe waste-handling practices and raising awareness about proper disposal methods, the campaign helped create a safer, healthier public space for all.
