Swachh Raho Aage Badho : Transforming School Environments in Kolkata

The WE Foundation’s WASH initiative has brought about a profound transformation in the learning environment for over 3,000 students across schools in Kolkata, West Bengal. By addressing the critical need for proper sanitation, this project has not only improved infrastructure but also created lasting change in the mindset and hygiene practices of children, teachers, and parents.

A Healthier, Safer School Experience

The intervention has provided students with access to safe, clean, and hygienic sanitation facilities, significantly reducing the risk of communicable diseases. Children now attend schools where they feel comfortable and safe, without the constant worry of unhygienic conditions impacting their health or dignity.

  • Privacy and Dignity for All: Separate sanitation facilities for boys, girls, and children with special needs have ensured inclusivity and privacy, creating a supportive and respectful learning environment.
  • Disease Prevention: With improved hygiene infrastructure, schools have seen a decline in illness-related absenteeism, allowing students to focus on their education and perform to their full potential.

Empowering Communities with Knowledge

The initiative extended beyond infrastructure, focusing on behavioral change and community involvement:

  • WASH Committees in Schools: The establishment of WASH committees has empowered students, teachers, and parents to take ownership of maintaining hygiene and sanitation practices.
  • Awareness and Training: Interactive sessions have educated students and teachers on the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation, instilling lifelong habits of cleanliness and care.

Advancing Gender Equity

Hygienic and gender-segregated sanitation facilities have addressed a major barrier to girls’ education, ensuring they feel confident and supported to attend school regularly. This initiative has paved the way for greater gender equity in education by removing a significant obstacle that disproportionately affects girls.

The Ripple Effect of Change

The impact of this project reaches far beyond the school premises:

  • Improved Attendance: With healthier students and fewer absences, schools are experiencing higher attendance rates and better academic outcomes.
  • Community Engagement: Parents and local communities are now more aware of the importance of sanitation and hygiene, with many replicating these practices at home.
  • Sustainable Habits: The behavioral shifts introduced through WASH committees and awareness programs are fostering a culture of hygiene and health that will continue to benefit future generations.

Through its WASH initiative, The WE Foundation has not only improved the sanitation infrastructure in schools but has also created a ripple effect of health, dignity, and opportunity for thousands of children. This program stands as a powerful example of how focused interventions can break down barriers, ensure inclusivity, and empower children to thrive in a safe and supportive learning environment.
