The We Foundation is committed to creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods while championing environmental stewardship. In partnership with CGI, we are proud to implement the Solar PV Technician Training Program—an initiative dedicated to empowering youth with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in green jobs. This program not only equips students with essential expertise in solar technology but also aligns them with meaningful employment opportunities in the fast-growing field of renewable energy.
The program is based at Acharya Pathshala Polytechnic in Bangalore, Karnataka, where students engage in an immersive learning experience. Through 600 hours of comprehensive, hands-on training, participants gain in-depth knowledge of solar PV systems, setting them up for success as skilled Solar PV Installers. Out of the 150 candidates initially mobilized, 50 passionate individuals have been selected for enrollment, all driven by a shared vision of contributing to a more sustainable future.
The curriculum covers a broad range of topics essential to working in the solar industry. Students first explore the basics of solar energy, including fundamental electrical concepts, Ohm’s Law, and critical calculations for power and energy. They gain insight into terms and metrics used across the industry, such as DNI, GHI, and diffused irradiance, and learn how the movement of the sun affects solar plant performance. As the course progresses, students dive deeper into photovoltaic systems, studying the various types of solar modules, the efficiency of PV systems, and the specific functions of components like charge controllers, inverters, and batteries. Through these practical lessons, participants acquire a well-rounded understanding of the technology, preparing them for hands-on work in real-world solar projects.
To ensure this opportunity reaches those who would benefit most, we conducted extensive outreach throughout Bangalore and nearby rural areas. Our team visited polytechnic colleges, hosted group counseling sessions, and conducted door-to-door mobilization in rural communities, introducing over 250 students to the potential of a career in renewable energy. This personalized approach enabled us to connect with students who may otherwise have missed out on such a transformative opportunity.
Out of the 50 enrolled participants, the majority are from engineering backgrounds, with 27 specializing in electrical engineering and 23 in civil engineering. We are proud to have reached a diverse group, including 2 young women who are blazing a trail in this traditionally male-dominated field.
The Solar PV Technician Training Program reflects our belief that equipping youth with practical, sustainable skills can drive both individual growth and environmental impact. By investing in solar technology training, The We Foundation is not only fostering employability but also supporting a cleaner, greener planet.
