Margherita, Assam

  • Context: Poor alternatives to menstrual protection like newspapers and old rags increase the risk of infections such as urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis. It can also have direct implications on reproductive health. Therefore, addressing these issues becomes extremely important.
  • Objective: To uplift the girls and women of Assam by enhancing their menstrual health and hygiene.
  • Impact – TWF’s innovative initiative brought about a change of habit among 1400 women and their families in Margherita.
  • Project summary – A campaign like Project Atmashakti was never witnessed before by the inhabitants of Margherita, Tinsukia. On 16 th 17 th and 18 th August 2023, The We Foundation in partnership with Upper Assam Petro Coke Private Limited (UAPC), Margherita Municipality, Assam, and in association with DAY-NULM, Assam, launched Project “Atmashakti”, a menstrual hygiene campaign for adolescent girls and self-help group women at The India Club,Margherita, Tinsukia, Assam.

Project Atmashakti initiated a behavioral change in adolescent girls and women who menstruate will now manage their periods with dignity without any interruption to their daily lives.
