Punarnava: Women Rising, Communities Rebuilding in Manipur

Impact Story

In the aftermath of conflict, life in the relief camps of Imphal, Manipur, is marked by uncertainty and upheaval. For women, displacement often means losing not just their homes, but their sense of agency and purpose. Amid these challenges, The WE Foundation launched Project Punarnava—a movement not just to restore healthcare, but to rekindle hope and empower women to become leaders of their own recovery.

From Survivors to Leaders

Project Punarnava began with a simple yet powerful idea: to put women at the center of rebuilding their communities. Over 2,500 women from relief camps and conflict-affected villages were invited to participate, not just as recipients of care, but as active agents of change. Through digital health assessments and outreach, women became the first point of contact for their families, learning to take charge of their health and wellbeing.

But Punarnava’s impact went far beyond health screenings. The project created spaces for women to share their stories, build networks of support, and develop leadership skills. Women were trained as health ambassadors, leading workshops on self-care, mental resilience, and community mobilization. Their voices, once silenced by trauma, now echo through the camps as they inspire others to step forward.

Stories of Strength

Behind every statistic is a story of transformation:

  • Meena, once confined to her shelter, now organizes group discussions on women’s rights and mental health.
  • Rani, who lost her home in the conflict, found new confidence and purpose as she guided other women through health camps.
  • The women of Punarnava have formed support circles, offering each other encouragement, resources, and a sense of belonging.

A New Chapter for Manipur

Empowered by their new roles, these women are shaping the future of their communities. Project Punarnava is not just restoring access to healthcare—it is igniting a movement of women’s leadership, resilience, and solidarity. With each woman stepping into her power, Punarnava is helping to rebuild Manipur, one empowered woman, one household, one village at a time.
