The severe cyclonic storm YAAS, with wind speed racing from 120-140 kmph, battered the country’s eastern coast of West Bengal.
Sectors like agriculture, electricity, fishery, animal husbandry, and horticulture were the worst affected as sea and river water gushed into the low-lying areas, inundating scores of villages.
Cyclone Yaas casted shadow on the livelihood and health of 8000 families of fishermen in Digha and coastal areas of Purba Medinipur.
To address the immediate needs of the families of fishermen, on 10 July 2021, The We Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal, and several others, is undertaking multi-dimensional actions to provide immediate relief to 500 Cyclone YAAS affected families of Fishermen in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal.
Shri Akhil Giri, the Honourable Minister of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal, along with senior officials of Fisheries, shall grace the camp.
We have partnered with like-minded organizations to address the environmental health in these villages and reduce the risk of acute diarrheal diseases alongside intensified COVID response.
We have also organized a primary healthcare outreach camp – general health and eye check-up camp for 200 cyclone-affected families.
