Restoring Hope: Transforming Lives of Single Orphan Children in Post-COVID Darjeeling

Health Impact Summary

In response to the devastating impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable families, The We Foundation launched a targeted initiative to support 16 single orphan children and their families in remote regions of the Darjeeling district. These efforts focused on health, nutrition, and education to uplift the lives of those severely affected by the pandemic.

Key Achievements:

1. Health Camp (28 March 2022):
  • Location: Mitra Medical Hall, Phansidewa, Darjeeling.
  • Participants: 16 children and their families.
  • Services Provided: Routine health check-ups conducted by a local physician, identifying health issues such as dyslipidemia, thyroid disorders, speech impairments, gastric problems, and jaundice.
  • Actions Taken: Medicines were prescribed, and diagnostic tests (CBC, TSH, urine analysis) were advised for accurate diagnosis and follow-up care.
2. Eye Camp (24 April 2022):
  • Location: Phansidewa Hospital More, Darjeeling.
  • Participants: 16 children and their families.
  • Services Provided: Comprehensive eye screenings, prescriptions for eyeglasses, and medicines to address vision deficiencies.
3. Nutrition Interventions:
  • Organized four nutrition camps in Phansidewa, Matigara, and Siliguri, covering all selected families.
  • Personalized Nutrition Plans: Children were screened and provided food charts based on their dietary needs.
  • Nutrition Kits Distributed: Contained essential items like rice, pulses, eggs, bananas, and oil to combat malnutrition and ensure food security.
  • Improvement in nutritional status for 4 malnourished children was documented.
4. Educational Support:
  • Distributed free educational kits, including books, stationery, and other supplies, ensuring continuity in education for all 16 children despite financial hardships.
