According to the World Bank report, Girl child education is a strategic development priority.Better-educated women tend to be healthier, participate more in the formal labor market, earn higher incomes, have fewer children, marry at a later age, and enable better health care and education for their children, should they choose to become mothers.

All these factors combined can help lift households, communities, and nations out of poverty.

Impact Stories

Establishment of model ICDS

The We Foundation in partnership with the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Department, Government of West Bengal has initiated remodeling and refurbishment of 8 ICDS centres in 8 wards of Shyampukur area of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the renovation work is on hold now and shall resume work post lockdown.

Advocacy for quality and integrated programmes for children:

The emotional, social and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development and on the adult they will become. Therefore, it is important to invest in very young children to maximize their future well-being. On 17 September 2016, the Orissa State Volunteers Society and Welfare Association (OSVSWA) in association with CeRCA, ICF International and The We Foundation organized a one-day Multi-stakeholder Consultation on “Addressing Quality Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and its Linkages with Nutrition: Challenges and Potential in Odisha”, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The purpose of this consultation was to bring together delegates and professionals from NGOs /civil society / health institutions/government / UN agencies working with children, with the objective of ensuring quality and integrated ECCE programmes in Orissa. This consultation gave a platform to promote integration and coordination of ECCE services offered through multiple sectors. The consultation was attended by Director, AIIMS, Senior government officials from state government, representatives of childfund international, Practical Action, and other others.
Outcome of the consultation: It was decided that a nutrition coalition led by TATA CSR Head comprising community-based NGOs in Orissa and ‘THE WE FOUNDATION’ will be formed with clear ToRs of each organization. A joint proposal on nutrition will be developed and submitted to donors to work in Orissa. This was later submitted and work is in progress.

Setting-up Library-in-a-Classroom in a Primary School in Kolkata:

The We Foundation with support from Inner Wheel Club of Calcutta is setting-up a library-in-a-classroom with a goal to improving the learning and reading outcomes of government primary school children by providing them with access to books and reading cards. An age-appropriate, graded books in multiple Indian languages, including English are made available to the students to motivate them to read books of their interest. Special reading classes have been commenced for primary students to enhance their reading skills and interest in reading books.

Happy School: Strengthening education

The We Foundation has joined hands with Inner Wheel Club of Calcutta to turn a Government Girls’ High Secondary School into a Happy School. As part of the Happy School project, we shall repair the handwashing station, facilitate cleanliness drive and plant trees along with students, repair the pavement area, install a drinking water station, and incinerator for disposal of sanitary napkins. We also plan to set-up a STEM learning centre in Schools for children.

Education sponsorship for school-going children

With support of benevolent donors, TWF has sponsored tuition fees of 60 school-going children studying in classes 7-10. Of these 60 students, 10 were sponsored by Inner Club of Calcutta.

Education for underprivileged youth

 Career Guidance for High Secondary students: On 25 September 2019, a one-day workshop on “Career Guidance for High Secondary School Girls and Boys was organized by The We Foundation in association with Bustee Local Committee, an NGO working in Kolkata. We facilitated the workshop and got an opportunity to solve genuine career-related issues of  40 students who are not sure of what to do after Class 12. The workshop enabled them to solve their problems themselves.
