Better Health, Brighter Futures: Our Mission in Healthcare

Why Health: The Cornerstone of a Thriving Nation

Health is not just the absence of disease; it is the foundation upon which dreams are built and futures are secured. At The We Foundation, we believe that addressing the health challenges of our communities is not just a necessity—it is a responsibility.

The Dual Burden of Disease in India

India is grappling with a daunting dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that threaten lives and livelihoods alike:

Communicable Diseases: A Persistent Threat

India continues to grapple with the devastating burden of communicable diseases, which claim millions of lives and disrupt countless families every year. Tuberculosis (TB) looms as a relentless adversary, with the country accounting for 26% of the global TB burden. Each year, 2.1 million new cases emerge, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations and creating a ripple effect of poverty and despair. For children under five, diarrheal diseases remain a cruel enemy, snatching away 13% of precious lives due to malnutrition and inadequate sanitation—a grim reminder of inequities in basic healthcare access.

In rural and tribal regions, malaria casts a long shadow, with over 5.6 lakh confirmed cases reported in 2022 alone. Despite advancements, its impact is disproportionately felt by communities already on the fringes of development. Meanwhile, HIV/AIDS continues to challenge the healthcare system, with approximately 2.3 million people living with the virus. For thousands still waiting for effective treatment, each day brings a battle for dignity and survival. These diseases, though preventable and treatable, persist as stark reminders of the urgent need for accessible healthcare and public awareness.

Non-Communicable Diseases: A Growing Epidemic

In the shadows of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are silently emerging as a devastating epidemic in India, wreaking havoc on individuals and families alike. Diabetes, a slow and silent killer, affects over 77 million Indians today, with this number expected to soar to a staggering 134 million by 2045. These statistics translate into millions of lives irrevocably altered, with families struggling to manage the financial and emotional toll of this chronic condition.

Hypertension, often called the “silent assassin,” affects nearly 30% of Indian adults, paving the way for fatal heart attacks and strokes. Cancer, another formidable foe, sees 1.39 million new cases annually. Breast, cervical, and oral cancers dominate, with delayed diagnoses often leaving patients with little hope and fewer options. Adding to this burden is the silent crisis of mental health disorders. With 15% of adults experiencing issues such as depression and anxiety, the lack of accessible treatment—exacerbated by stigma and inadequate resources—leaves millions to suffer in silence.

The rise of NCDs is a stark wake-up call, demanding a collective response to prioritize early detection, preventive care, and comprehensive treatment. Beyond numbers, these are human stories—of pain, resilience, and the urgent need for a healthier tomorrow.

The Human Cost of Inaction

These numbers are more than statistics—they represent lives interrupted and potential unrealized:

  1. A child battling malnutrition is 12 times more likely to die from preventable diseases.
  2. Families spend an estimated ₹43,000 annually (over half the income of a low-income household) on treating chronic diseases, often plunging them into debt.
  3. Women, often caregivers, bear the double burden of anemia (57%) and inadequate access to healthcare.
The Way Forward: Health is Wealth

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), investing in health yields exponential benefits for individuals and economies:

  1. ₹1 invested in maternal, newborn, and child health generates returns of up to ₹75 through improved productivity and reduced healthcare costs.
  2. Strengthening health systems could prevent over 6 million premature deaths annually in India caused by NCDs and infections.
Because Every Life Matters

Health is not a privilege—it is a human right. Together, we can reduce the burden of disease, empower communities, and create a healthier, more resilient India.
Let’s build a nation where health fuels hope, and every individual has the chance to thrive.

Health Education and Capacity Building for Health Workers

TWF is deeply invested in strengthening the healthcare ecosystem by training frontline health workers. Our Health Education and Training Program equips government-recognized MAS (Mahila Arogya Samiti) members with the knowledge and skills they need to serve their communities effectively.

The program covers:

  • Maternal and child health: Guidance on antenatal care, safe deliveries, and postnatal support.
  • Immunization: Highlighting the importance of vaccinations in preventing life-threatening diseases.
  • Nutrition education: Addressing malnutrition among women and children.
  • Family planning: Educating families on reproductive health and adolescent care.
  • Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): Promoting hygiene practices to prevent infections and diseases.

Health workers are also trained on their roles and responsibilities as community health advocates, fostering interdepartmental collaboration for better service delivery. These sessions empower them to improve health outcomes for pregnant and lactating mothers, children under six years of age, and adolescents, thereby reducing malnutrition, morbidity, and mortality rates.

Crisis Care Initiative

Disasters disrupt lives and access to essential healthcare services, leaving affected populations vulnerable. Through our Disaster Management Programs, TWF provides timely and effective health interventions in crisis situations.

Services offered include:

  • Emergency healthcare and first aid to those in need.
  • Distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies.
  • Psychological support to help communities cope and recover from traumatic events.

These programs are a testament to TWF’s commitment to standing by vulnerable communities during their most challenging times.

At The We Foundation, every initiative is a step towards creating healthier, more resilient communities. By addressing the healthcare needs of underserved populations, we aim to bring dignity, hope, and improved quality of life to those who need it most. Together, we are building a future where access to healthcare is a fundamental right for all.
