Punarnava: Women Reclaiming Their Voice in Mizoram’s Hills

Impact Story

In the remote, hillside villages of Mizoram, generations of women have lived in the shadows of tradition and isolation. Limited access to opportunities, deep-rooted taboos, and geographic barriers have long kept women from stepping into roles of leadership and influence. Project Punarnava: Mizoram, led by The WE Foundation, is changing that narrative—not just by addressing health gaps, but by empowering women to reclaim their agency and reshape their communities.

From Silence to Strength

Project Punarnava began with a vision: to turn women into the architects of their own futures. Over 2,500 women from tribal communities were invited to participate in digital health assessments and community camps, not only as recipients of care but as leaders and change-makers. Through these interactions, women learned to speak up, share their stories, and support one another in overcoming long-standing social barriers.

But Punarnava’s impact went far beyond health checkups. The project became a platform for women to build networks, develop leadership skills, and break the silence around women’s rights and dignity. Women were trained as community ambassadors, organizing workshops on self-advocacy, mental resilience, and collective action. Their voices, once muted by tradition, now inspire others to step forward and demand change.

Stories of Transformation

Behind every statistic is a story of courage:

  • Lalmuani, once hesitant to speak in public, now leads village meetings and empowers other women to claim their rights.
  • Lalruatfeli, who grew up believing her voice didn’t matter, now mentors younger women and organizes support groups.
  • The women of Punarnava have created a new culture of solidarity, where every woman feels seen, heard, and valued.

A New Dawn for Mizoram

Empowered by their new roles, these women are shaping the future of their communities. Project Punarnava is not just closing gaps in healthcare—it is igniting a movement of women’s empowerment, resilience, and hope. With each woman stepping into her power, Punarnava is helping to rebuild Mizoram, one empowered woman, one household, one village at a time.
